Piper PA-22/20-180

The vortex generators changed the airplane’s stall speed by 4–6 mph. The new stall speed is 41–43 mph, down from 47–49 mph, and I now have full control right up to the stall. Previously, aileron control was lost at approximately 52 mph. Very impressive results!

My brother flew it for the first time after installing the VGs and couldn’t believe how much improvement they made for such a small cost and quick installation. The instructions said to place 15 VGs from the wingtip at 60 mm spacing, and thereafter at 90 mm spacing. We installed them over roughly two-thirds of the aileron , approximately 25 VGs from the tip at 60 mm, and the rest at 90 mm spacing.

This test was conducted with full flaps, a little power on, one person on board, and full fuel (166 liters / 44 U.S. gallons).
